1. a quarter of a barrel, used in Great Britain as a measure of capacity. A firkin equals either about 9 imperial gallons or about 56 pounds.
2. a small wooden cask for liquids, fish, butter, and other commodity.
[Middle English ferdekin, perhaps < unrecorded Middle Dutch verdelkijn (diminutive) < verdel (literally) fourth part]
